The motor is a machine which converts the electrical energy into mechanical energy. There are various types of motor in the electrical world, the most popular single phase induction motor is one of them. This article discusses an overview of induction motor.
What is induction motor.
A typical AC electric motor is an induction motor, usually referred to as an asynchronous motor. In an induction motor, the rotating magnetic field of the stator winding is used to electromagnetically induce the electric current into the rotor which required to produce the torque. An induction motor's rotor can be either a wound type rotor or a squirrel cage rotor.
Single Phase Induction Motor working.
- In the single phase induction motor, single phase a.c. supply is given to the stator winding.
- The stator winding carries an alternating current which produces the flux which is also alternating in nature.
- This flux is called main flux and links with the rotor conductors and due to transformer action e.m.f. gets induced in the rotor.
- The induced e.m.f. drives current through the rotor as rotor circuit is closed circuit.
- This rotor current produces another flux called rotor flux required for the motoring action.
- Thus second flux is produced according to induction principle due to induced e.m.f. hence the motor is called induction motor.
- In d.c. motor a separate supply is required to armature to produce armature flux. This is an important difference between d.c. motor and an induction motor.
- The d.c. motors are self starting while single phase induction motors are not self starting.
Types of Induction Motor.
On the basis power supply, there are mainly two types of induction motor, single phase induction motor and three phase induction motor. Again single phase induction motor can be classified based on their construction and the starting methods.
- Split phase induction motor
- Capacitor start induction motor
- Capacitor start and capacitor run induction motor.
- Shaded pole induction motor.
