It is noted that the voltage and the current are out of phase when a capacitor is used in an ac circuit. By comparing the voltage and current expressions for a capacitor in an ac circuit, it is possible to determine the phase difference between the voltage and current.

- If the circuit is only capacitive then the phase angle between current and voltage will be 90 degree.
- Current leads the voltage by 90 degree.
- We also can say voltage lags the current by 90 degree.
